HYANNIS  ENGINE RENUMBERING

ENGINES RENUMBERED
With the recent delivery and placing in service of the newest Engine,
a 2021 Pierce Enforcer as "Engine 2" (822), the department did
a little renumbering with the engines similar to what they did with
the ambulances. The County radio numbers are no longer displayed
on the exterior of the engines. Instead, a placard system, similar
to the Ambulance system, displays a simple [2] [3] [4] or [6] on
the vehicle based on its assignment on a given day.

IN HONOR
of the 1927 Ahrens Fox "Engine 1" and 1949 Mack "Engine 5"
still maintained by Hyannis, those numbers have essentially
been retired as active vehicle numbers for decades.

NEWEST ENGINE
The new Engine 2 (822) replaced the oldest 1992 Foam Engine 2,
"Any Time. Any Where. Any Job"
across the front, which has been retired.

REASSIGNED ENGINES
The remaining engines, have been reorganized to number them
in order by age, with the newer units having the lower numbers
similarly as the ambulances. Putting their BEST FIRST.

The 2011 Pierce Arrow - originally Engine 6 (826) is being
assigned the #2 role and is thus going to carry the [3] placard
effectively becoming Engine 3 (823).

The 2005 Pierce Arrow - originally Engine 3 (823), being the
third oldest, gets reassigned as Engine 4 (824?) with the [4]
placard. Hyannis has not had an Engine 4 for many, many
years. The last unit to carry Engine 4 was actually the old
Heavy Rescue when it first came in the 1980s before being
called Rescue 1.

Late last year, Hyannis picked up a used 1996 Pierce Engine
that started out in Cambridge as a Squirt and then served
the City of Chelsea for a number of years. This "new"
fourth Engine for Hyannis, being the oldest current engine,
gets the largest number [6] as Engine 6 (826).

For the score card....
Engine 2 (822) = Shop ID 8222021
Engine 3 (823) = Shop ID 8262011
Engine 4 (824) = Shop ID 8232005
Engine 6 (826) = Shop ID 8241996

HYANNIS ENGINE 6
The 1996 Pierce, formerly Cambridge/Chelsea, now in service
with Hyannis. The day the photo was taken, the future Engine 3 (823),
formerly Engine 6 (826), Shop ID 8262011, was out of service.
So the new Engine 4 (824?), Shop ID 8232005, was moved up
one position becoming [3] instead of [4] for a few days.
So naturally, the new Engine 6 (826), Shop ID 8241996,
(even though it was never actually ever officially Engine 824),
likewise moved into the Engine 4 [4] position, until Engine 4
goes back in service, and Engine 6 becomes Engine 6 again.

This may seem a little confusing, to some, but once everyone gets
used to it, and nothing goes out of service, it should be....
Well.... keep a score card.
I have to!

DISCLAIMER
I think I got it all correct.
But I'm not sure.

HYANNIS  AMBULANCES

HYANNIS AMBULANCE NUMBERING
Those who have been following Hyannis recently are aware that
the department uses a computerized voice CAD dispatch program
to dispatch calls. In conjunction, ambulances were renumbered
essentially with the newest being A-1 (right) and the oldest being
A-4 (left). Typically A-1 gets the first call. A-2 the next, etc...
County numbers are still used on mutual aid, but no longer
displayed on the exterior of the vehicles. Instead, placards
bearing the unit's assignment that particular day are used.
Shop ID numbers bearing the unit's original county number
and year are used for tracking the actual vehicle over time.
A-1 (831) = Shop ID 8252019
A-2 (832) = Shop ID 8282017
A-3 (833) = Shop ID 8312015
A-4 (834) = Shop ID 8272005

HYANNIS FIRE HEADQUARTERS
(Opened in 2018 - Completed Oct 2019)

The new Hyannis Fire Headquarters & Hyannis Firefighters Memorial Park
was officially dedicated on October 12, 2019.

The Hyannis Fire Department approved a new $18.5 Million,
33,000 square foot Fire Headquarters
in April 2016.

Ground was broken on May 8, 2017.
The new station was built on the same site as the previous 1965 station
at 95 High School Road Ext. The administrative and living quarters,
along with 4 double deep bays were built first allowing the department
to remain in operation from the old station until moving into the
new station on October 17, 2018.

The old station was then torn down and the final phase begun.
The entire project was completed in October 2019.

HYANNIS FIRE DISPATCH

Hyannis Fire Alarm

A NEW DAY
The new communications center at the Barnstable Police Station
will soon (expected week of June 25, 2018) begin dispatching for
the Hyannis Fire Department. A dozen civilian dispatchers were
hired by the BPD and have been trained to dispatch the Hyannis
Fire Department as well as Barnstable Police.

The Comm center has 4 console positions, at least one of which
will be dedicated to Hyannis FD. Each dispatch station is setup
with about 7 computer displays including 911, CAD, mapping,
and touch screen radio controls.

As dispatching begins, so too will the use of a new CAD system
and a new "voice" on the radio.  The Computer Aided Dispatch
(CAD) system will use RedAlert to manage calls. As dispatchers
enter information into CAD, another program known as PURVIS
will quickly formulate and announce (dispatch) calls using a
computer generated, tone, voice and format.

The new system is in use by a number of departments across the country, including Boston, but this will be a first on Cape Cod.

So when you begin to hear the new voice on the radio
you will know where it is coming from.

OFFICIAL CUT OVER DONE ON THURS JUNE 28, 2018

Dispatching
The transition of dispatching duties from the Hyannis Fire Station
to the new communications center at Barnstable Police took
place over a few days this week.  The new "Purvis" automated
voice dispatch went in service and use of the new CAD program
also went in service.

HYANNIS FIRE STATION APPROVED

HYANNIS VOTERS APPROVE NEW FIRE STATION
After several years of planning, several failed votes, and a lot of work to
come up with a new Headquarters Fire Station plan that will serve the
community for many years to come, voters approved construction of a
new station by over 73% at the special district meeting held on
April 9, 2016.

The $18.5 Million station is expected to be about
33,000 square feet in size and will be built on parcels of land previously
purchased adjacent to the present station.

The new station replaces the station built in 1965 on High School Rd Ext.
which has been outgrown for many years.

Congratulations to Hyannis on approving this new facility!

HYANNIS FIRE STATION PLAN

The Hyannis Fire District has been working on plans for a new Fire Headquarters Station
that would be built on the site of the current station if approved by voters. Plans are still
being adjusted in an attempt to reduce the potential costs.
July 2013

The Hyannis Fire District purchased 3 parcels of land surrounding the current fire
headquarters on High School Road Ext. for the purposes of building a new fire station.
The current headquarters built in 1965 has simply been out grown and inadequate
for the department needs. Public meetings are held in 2012 to inform the public
of the needs and potential for moving forward with a new station soon.
2012

A full house at the Hyannis Fire Station, Oct 2005
Some options are being evaluated relative to the department's station needs.  The station originally built in 1964 has already been added onto and renovated a couple times, but has no further room for expansion.  On site parking, training areas, office space, and living space are among the concerns in addition to the full apparatus floor.

Hyannis Looses A Friend

Hyannis Fire Department
Regrets to announce the passing of 12 year Hyannis Fire Department
Mascot and Dalmatian "C.J." on Saturday June 25, 2005.
C.J. had become quite sick in recent months and firefighters had to
make the difficult decision recently to euthanize the station mascot.
C.J. will be missed by all the guys and the many children who looked
forward to seeing "The Fire Dog" on visits to the fire station.

Hyannis Fire Radio - 868.2125
Hyannis FD had a number of concerns with the Cape's 800 mhz trunked radio system.  In building coverage was not satisfactory in a number of major buildings within Hyannis including Cape Cod Hospital, the Cape Cod Mall, Barnstable High School, and others.  As a result Hyannis experimented with a number of options ranging from low band repeaters to 400 mhz to 800 mhz options.  Hyannis has now (June 2002) begun simulcasting its communications on both 33.94 and a NEW 868.2125 conventional channel.  Hyannis retains its 800 mhz trunked talkgroup as well as its 460.625 channel.   More to follow.... June 2002.
Hyannis Fire Department - Busiest on Cape!
Once again, HYFD is the Cape's busiest Fire Department.  Hyannis responded to 5,657 runs in 2001, an increase of 370 runs over the 5,287 runs in 2000.  This is a 7% increase in runs making it an average of 15.5 runs a day.

Hyannis runs with 11 personnel per shift, one of them serving as a dispatcher.

Hyannis Tower 829 displays the colors in the weeks following Sept 11, 2001. Several HYFD personnel responded as part of MA-TF1 FEMA team to the WTC spending 8 days at ground zero.
